Project Context

In response to the rapid shift to virtual instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic, Killeen ISD developed a districtwide digital learning program to help educators transition from traditional classroom instruction to effective online teaching.

As the instructional lead for the elementary professional learning program, I led a team of elementary educators in designing and developing a comprehensive self-paced course in Schoology. A colleague simultaneously led a separate team that developed the secondary professional learning pathway, ensuring the district could meet the unique instructional needs of both elementary and secondary educators.

Together, these coordinated efforts supported approximately 3,000 educators, students, and families by providing just-in-time professional learning and instructional resources during one of the most significant educational transformations in recent history.

My Role

I served as the:

  • Elementary Project Lead
  • Project Manager
  • Instructional Designer
  • LMS Administrator
  • Curriculum Developer
  • Professional Learning Strategist

I coordinated a team of elementary educators through planning, content development, instructional design, and implementation of the elementary digital learning program. My responsibilities included establishing the course structure, guiding content development, ensuring instructional consistency, and creating a scalable professional learning experience that educators could access on demand.

The Challenge

The transition to remote instruction required thousands of educators to rapidly learn new digital tools and instructional strategies while continuing to serve students with minimal interruption.

The project needed to:

  • Provide immediate access to professional learning.
  • Support educators with varying levels of technology experience.
  • Create consistent districtwide expectations.
  • Offer flexible, self-paced learning.
  • Continuously evolve as new guidance and instructional needs emerged.

Instructional Design Approach

The course was designed around adult learning principles and practical application.

Learning experiences included:

  • Short instructional videos
  • Step-by-step tutorials
  • Downloadable resources
  • Discussion opportunities
  • Technology implementation guides
  • Self-paced learning modules
  • Authentic classroom applications

Content focused on helping educators confidently implement digital teaching strategies rather than simply learning software features.

Technology Integration

The course leveraged Schoology as the district’s learning management system and incorporated multiple digital tools that supported remote instruction and collaboration.

Resources were designed to be immediately applicable in educators’ virtual classrooms while providing ongoing reference materials throughout the school year.

Project Impact

The elementary and secondary teams collectively:

  • Supported approximately 3,000 educators, students, and families during the district’s transition to remote learning.
  • Created a centralized districtwide professional learning ecosystem for virtual instruction.
  • Enabled educators to rapidly adopt digital instructional practices.
  • Established a sustainable repository of professional learning resources that continued supporting educators beyond the initial transition.
  • Demonstrated the effectiveness of collaborative instructional design and scalable professional learning during organizational change.

Skills Demonstrated

  • Instructional Design
  • Adult Learning
  • Project Management
  • LMS Administration
  • Multimedia Development
  • Professional Learning
  • Educational Technology
  • Organizational Change Management
  • Technology Integration

Reflection

This project reinforced the importance of designing professional learning that is practical, flexible, and immediately applicable. During a time of unprecedented change, the greatest challenge was not simply introducing new technology but helping educators build confidence and sustain high-quality instruction in an entirely new learning environment.
